Please mention the JBL Memorial 5K and make your reservation by August 26, 2011 in order to receive the discounted rate.
The JBL Memorial 5K was created in memory of John Lewis to provide support to the outreach programs of the Asheville Buncombe Youth Soccer Association. In 1998, John sustained fatal injuries in an automobile accident. He was 16 years old. John was an avid athlete with a great deal of compassion for others. He always wanted to help others in any way that he could. This race honors John's love of sports and community.
The first JBL Memorial 5K was held in 2008. To date, more than $30,000 has been donated to the outreach programs of the ABYSA. These funds provide soccer programming and life skills training for many of Asheville's youth. ABYSA's Outreach programs serve over 800 low income children who are underserved by youth sports organizations and youth athletes with special needs each year. ABYSA's Project Kick Start partners with Asheville Parks & Recreation, Children First, the YWCA, Asheville City community centers and Asheville City Schools to deliver soccer programming to low income, at risk children at no cost. Go To Goal, an after school athletic and life skills program for underserved girls aged 8 to 11, provides healthy food during practice, soccer gear, and transportation home after each session. For more information about these programs, please go to www.abysa.org.
